Peculiar Burial Practices
In different places around the world, one can discover odd and uncustomary rituals performed for the dead. In India, there is the so-called “sati” or self-immolation that is performed by widows. When a woman’s husband dies, she is required to lie down next to her husband and be buried alive with him. Although the practice has been stopped in the 1950s, some conservative women in India continue to do it.
Another unique burial rite is practiced in Tibet. When a person dies, Tibetans present the body to the skies by offering it to the vultures. The vultures, which are called sky dancers or “dakinis,” are believed to bring the dead person’s soul to the heavens.
